Friendly Feathers: Life with Pierre
By Dr. Fran Smith
|
Summary
For bird lovers young and old, this book demonstrates the relationship between one parrot and his family. Pierre, the African Grey, says greetings, makes contact calls, requests food, comments on events, and even gives commands to the poodle. Do parrots and other birds in the wild use specific sounds to communicate the same messages in bird sounds? Ornithologists have found that birds do "talk" to each other in their own way. Deon Matzen’s charming illustrations bring Pierre to life in this delightfully illustrated account of the bird's communication with his family. It’s enjoyable reading for both reader and audience.
About the Author
Dr. Fran Smith is a retired Clinical Psychologist from Private Practice in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. She graduated from Nova-Southeast School of Psychology. Her undergraduate degree from Brooklyn College is in Early Childhood Education. Caring for two pets, Pierre an African Grey Parrot and Cosette, a Standard Poodle, is Dr. Smith's hobby. She recorded words and phrases spoken by the bird over a period of years and then realized that Pierre's communication represented a real relationship between the bird and the family he adopted. Dr. Smith put Pierre's communication into the context of a day for the book "Friendly Feathers".
