Avian Flu

Postby Lucysmom » Fri Dec 02, 2005 5:20 pm

I know lots of people are panicking about the avian flu, & so far the deadly strain hasn't been found in the U.S. But it got me thinking- there are other strains of avian flu that have not passed to humans, but do occur on poultry farms, etc. There was recently a bird market that was closed down for a month in Philadelphia, near where I live, because a type of avian flu was identified (this was a market that caters to the Asian community- I think it sold live poultry). I recently got my flu shot- Is there a flu vaccine available for pet birds? My husband is afraid to take our Grey anywhere there's other birds (bird store, groomer, etc). I don't want to be neurotic about this, just cautious.

I don't think there is a vaccine. But I do want you to know that I read somewhere that lots of the people who died from the pandemic in 1918 were the ones who TOOK the flu shots.

I agree with you not to panic but please begin practicing very good bio-security NOW. The people of Southern California went thru this problem a few years ago with the Newcastle's outbreak. The ones who were very careful NOT to subject their birds to any other birds or problems and who practiced strict biosecurity were okay.

To learn more about biosecurity, go to www.Cocka2.com and read about Newcastle. I agree with your husband to keep your babies away from others' babies, possibly for the next year or so, until all of this rides over.

But the key here is for us ALL to remain Animal people, close and connected with each other. The hype and govt/presidential sound bites are going to scare lots of people. We animal people need to stay calm and help people remain grounded and not go off and do very stupid things.
