Grey toy making

Postby irolnellup » Thu Oct 02, 2008 2:09 am

Not being satisfied with the toys on the market for my two greys, I started making my own toys for them. Every time I would go toy shopping I would find pieces too small attached to the toys or bells that I felt were not suitable to the strength of a Greys bite! I would find alot of really nice parrot toys but there was always something attached to them that I felt could potentially injure my bird. I'm really fortunate that my husband is in the trades because I have access to a huge assortment of woods to work worth and I've been slowly learning how to cut and drill holes of various sizes. I use ropes and chains, combine non dyed leather and strips of thick clean cardboard for them to rip up. They love them! Here is my question (now that I have prattled on...) I read an article on line about how they dyed the bird toys that you purchase at the pet store with dilueted food color. After reading the article you have on the Round Table-I am horrified. When I first started making the toys I refused to color them. Last month I made one huge toy for each Grey and I used the food color (highly diluted). After reading your article this week-I took both toys out of each of thier cages. Maggie, do you know if all parrot toys are dyed using food color? What a horrible thing to do! It's like painting your childrens toys with lead based paint!

Lori,

Where's that article? I need to read it again. I think lots of the coloring is vegetable color base, such as beet, and so on. Don't panic yet.
