Help with medicating an unsocialized bird

Postby allie » Thu Apr 12, 2007 5:42 pm

Maggie,

Luna ate her first Medicam grape yesterday and I was so pleased. She licked up all the sweet "juice" (medicine! hehe) and got most of the drug in her.

Well today she dropped the grape after one bite. Then I tried injecting it with a syringe and needle into a piece of brown bread that she loves. Same thing. Nibbled and dropped it.

Stupid me, I forget how smart they are and I let her see me injecting the bread.

What now? I feel like I really need to get some anti-inflammatory in her after her landing just now on the foot before the swelling starts again, but I can't think of how to do it.

She is so limited in what she likes to eat. Basically seeds, apple, grape. Those are her favorites. I think she's suspicious of anything I give her now.

I certainly can't open her beak! and drop it in. A friend of mine has an Umbrella Cockatoo that will turn up her head and open her beak for her meds! I wish!

Help

Can you make a puree and put it in...such as sweet potato, butternut squash or something like that? Mashed potatoes???

Cutting a tiny hole in an apple piece and filling it with hte liquid helped. She thought it was apple juice!
