freezing seed

Postby mrgray » Sun Dec 31, 2006 7:30 pm

I am a new owner of a wonderfull 13 wk old grey. The shop I bought him from of course gave me a mix of seeds. I am concerned about storing them. Can I freeze them in small amounts? He eats lots of fruits, veggies already and his diet is about 30% seeds.
Help from a new mom!

Yes you may. Actually, freezing seed is good, especially for hot periods, because it kills off any seed bugs/larvae that may be lurking in the seed bag.

Honestly, I have just placed the entire bag of seed in the freezer and brought out small quantities for serving for a week at a time or so......refrigerate that until use.

But now, I give my guys human grade seed. Specifically, Shiloh Farms sells 12 ounce bags of hulled and unhulled sunflower seeds. They are shipped in a 6-bag shipper and I give my guys a little bit of that every night, along with other seeds.

Happy new year!!!

Hi,

On a similar note, do they sell small amounts of hulled pine nuts?

Thanks,
Allie in LA who has not been able to find unsalted hulled sunflower seeds anywhere locally!

Allie,

I have always bought the regular packages of pine nuts from the health food store. I use Whole Foods now.

Pine nuts do not seem to spoil really quickly. Have noticed any spoiling?
