TEACHING GREY TO TALK

Postby merlin » Sun Dec 18, 2011 2:29 am

Dear Merlin,

My bird is one year old. He makes lots of sounds, such as the doorbell, microwave, and sirene. But how can I teach him to talk with meaning? How old are Greys when they talk?

Thanks,
Myra

Dear Myra,

Thanks so much for contacting us. Most Greys become "prolific" talkers between 12-18 months old, but many have also been known to learn much earlier. Some do not talk at all. This does not mean they are not smart... they may be the smartest because they have learned how to communicate their needs without talking.

Please refer to an article that I wrote on teaching your grey to talk. It is in the article section: http://www.africangreys.com/articles/overview/alexteachtalk.html If the link does not work, just go to the Article section table of contents.

Also, we have a section under Helpful Hints that gives you ideas that have worked for other pet humans in teaching their greys to talk:
http://www.africangreys.com/hints/talking.htm It is in the Helpful Hints section.

Hoping this helps.
Blessings,
Maggie-
