Peanuts

Postby snipeorod » Thu Jul 06, 2006 1:02 pm

I have read that it is recommended to give human grade peanuts to parrots. I usually buy mine from PetsMart I believe are Kaytee. I have tried to find somewhere on the package if they are human grade or not but I do not see it labeled as such. Also how safe are the unsalted peanuts that are sold at grocery stores? I know the peanuts should be unsalted for sure but what about them being roasted? I thought all peanuts were roasted but I read somewhere there are raw unroasted peanuts that are good for parrots.

You may want to contact PetSmart about whether their peanuts are human grade. I purchase my birds' peanuts from Whole Foods, which I KNOW are human grade. Yes, unsalted is important. I think the roasted and raw are both okay.

I generally throw away any peanuts that have dark spots on the shells or ones that are open. This makes me feel that I am even further protecting my babies from any mold problems.

Hoping this helps,
Maggie-
